What medical conditions qualify for disability in Indiana?

| Jan 28, 2021 | Firm News

Disabilities aren’t always physically noticeable. There are plenty of medical conditions that qualify for long-term disability benefits beyond what you may already know. Three types of medical conditions that can qualify for long-term disability are mental disorders, skin disorders and immune system disorders.

Mental disorders

If you suffer from major depressive disorder, you may qualify for long-term disability and SSD benefits. As with all other medical conditions, you need a doctor’s diagnosis in order to apply for disability.

Other examples of mental disorders that sometimes count for long-term disability are bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, OCD, autism and trauma-related disorders. Certain restrictions that apply may differ based on the type of mental disorder, so you may want to consult with a disability lawyer before applying for benefits.

Skin disorders

Skin disorders that make it impossible for you to maintain employment often qualify for disability benefits. Even if you acquired the skin disorder through pathogens, you can get long-term disability and SSD.

When assessing the severity of your skin condition, the Social Security Administration considers how your symptoms limit you, the extent of any skin lesions, the frequency of your flare-ups and the side effects of your treatments.

Immune system disorders

The Social Security Administration categorizes immune system disorders as autoimmune, immune deficiency or HIV. All of these medical conditions can qualify for long-term disability.

You’ll need to provide your medical history, a record of your physical examination and a report of your laboratory results when applying for disability. Some people also need to show their tissue biopsy reports or medical imaging results.

If you have a disability that impairs your ability to work, it’s worth looking into receiving SSD and long-term disability benefits. The Social Security Administration recognizes a wide range of medical issues and the impairments they cause as long-term disabilities. These three types of health problems are just a few examples of what qualifies for disability benefits.
